abstract = "Several studies indicate that the replacement of natural
vegetation cover in a given river basin tends to affect its
hydrological characteristics. In general, deforestation causes an
increase in the annual mean discharge. In the Amazonia tropical
forest, where the deforestation area has increased, few studies
analyse the effect of land cover and land use changes on the
hydrological cycle. This study aims to determine whether such
changes affect the discharge of a sub-basin in the state of
Par{\'a}, eastern Amaz{\^o}nia. Thus, is displayed the analysis
of time series of hydrological data of the area for two distinct
periods in which the above hypothesis are verified using
statistical tests. Based on land cover maps, the first period of
the time series (1993-2002) is characterized by little
deforestation area in the basin. The second period (2003-2012)
occurred an intense deforestation, where 50.8% of the total area
was deforested by 2012. The results shows that there is no
meaningful difference in the annual mean precipitation between
period 1 and 2. Occurred a 22.6% increase in the annual mean
discharge of the sub-basin from period 1 to 2. The results suggest
that deforestation altered the hydrological response of the
sub-basin increasing the annual mean discharge.",
